How to Check If Your HP Warranty Is Still Valid

Step-by-step guide to checking HP warranty status using your serial number.

Why HP Warranty Status Matters

Knowing whether your HP device is under warranty can save you significant repair costs. HP's standard warranty covers manufacturing defects and hardware failures — if your device breaks while under warranty, HP will repair or replace it at no cost. Once the warranty expires, the same repair can cost hundreds of dollars.

What You Need: Your HP Serial Number

HP uses a serial number (sometimes called a product number) to identify each device. This is typically a 10–12 character string. Here is where to find it:

  • Laptops: On a label on the bottom of the device. Also visible in Settings > System > About.
  • Desktops: On the back or side panel.
  • Printers: On a label inside the ink cartridge access area or on the back.

On Windows, you can also open a command prompt and type: wmic bios get serialnumber

How to Check Your HP Warranty Status

Use our HP warranty check tool to go directly to HP's warranty portal with your serial number pre-filled. The process is:

  1. Enter your serial number in the form.
  2. Click "Check Warranty" — this opens HP's official support page.
  3. HP's system will display your device details, warranty start and end dates, and what coverage type applies.

Understanding HP Warranty Types

HP offers several warranty tiers:

  • Standard Limited Warranty: 1 year, covers manufacturing defects, mail-in service.
  • HP Care Pack: Extended warranty purchased separately, extends coverage from 1 to 3 years and may include on-site service.
  • HP Accidental Damage Protection: Add-on that covers drops and spills, available at purchase or within 90 days.

What If Your Warranty Has Expired?

If your HP warranty has lapsed, you still have options. Third-party extended warranty providers like Asurion and Upsie offer plans that can cover your HP device for accidental damage, hardware failure, and more. These plans are often more affordable than HP's own extended care packs purchased after the fact.
